Let me first ask what tv shows do you enjoy now or have ever enjoyed?
We didn't have cable growing up, well not till I had my first apartment at 18 and while I can say now that just means I still years to "grow up." I remember watching shows like KNIGHT RIDER, A-Team, DALLAS, SANFORD & SONS, GOLDEN GIRLS, GUNSMOKE, THREE STOOGES, VOLTRON, G.I. JOE, GOBOTS, SILVERHAWKS, THUNDERCATS, FRIENDS, ER, MASH, and more I can't remember the names of. More recently I enjoy EVERBODY LOVES RAYMOND, KING OF QUEENS, HOUSE, BONES, NCIS, CSI, NUMBERS, HELL'S KITCHEN, IRON CHEIF/IRON Chief AMERICA, AMERICAN CHOPPER, AMERICAN HOT ROD, UNIVERSE, GANGLAND, SONS OF ANARCHY, THE FORGOTTEN, and NIP/TUCK ... more to come as the new season has started and there are some shows that look entertaining.
Sometimes I even enjoy watching sports: football, basketball, baseball and racing. My family and I like to go see the local team at the park and I sit there eating my peanuts and rooting for the home team. I watch the Olympics when they come around once all the pomp and circumstance is over. I enjoy watching people to extraordinary things that they have dedicated their lives to do for a very short time.
I like shows that are original. Most of the ones I have mentioned have spin-off’s and HOLLYWOOD is getting less and less original whether it's TV or movies. A lot of TV networks and movie studios are coping each other or things from past. Now don't get me wrong TRANSFORMERS and it's sequel are great movies but would someone have come up with the idea if it had not been for the original cartoon from the 80's?
"Reality TV" as it's called is a prime example of the DECLINE of our creativity in HOLLYWOOD. Maybe it's because they are taking the arts out of schools or the increase in the strength of illegal drugs or that people are trying to be healthier so they are drinking less Starbucks or the crazy energy drinks? The only "Reality TV" show I've enjoyed every season since it started is the popular AMERICAN CHOPPER about the family run company of Orange County Choppers. They don't seem to be acting when they fight, yell, throw things, run over stuff with their trucks, or build a chopper or two. AMERICAN HOTROD is off the air because the famous Boyd Codington passed away. He made some awesome hotrods over the years and seemed to be a nice guy in the cut throat world of hotrod building. HELL'S KITCHEN stars Gordon Ramsey one of the top chiefs of the world. I enjoy cooking for friends and family (recipes to come later) so I enjoy this even though things seem over the top at times. Have you ever worked in a kitchen over a hot stove with servers yelling at you for orders? Well if you have you'd know he's just trying to be like a military Drill Instructor who makes his soldiers strong enough to handle to stress of battle. Now I'm not sure how IRON CHEIF AMERICA classified but I consider it to be a "Reality Cooking Show" but I enjoy watching them run around making some incredible dishes off the top of their heads and under the stress of a time limit and having to make 5 dishes. I get a lot of recipes off of www.FoodNetwork.com to try at home.
I don't like the other "Reality TV" shows because they do seem scripted and feel fake...like they are just saying what the producers want. You can see this if can catch some out takes. I told my wife that John and Kate would feel stupid if their marriage didn't work out, but I guess instead they are bigger that before. It's almost like they decided the only ways to keep the show going was to have more kids or get a divorce. Neither parent ever seemed happy to me, except on the RARE occasion but with that many kids it would be hard to find time for yourself so I can understand feeling depressed or overwhelmed. MTV's shows mostly seem scripted and are getting less different and more similar. I would say that goes for CBS also with shows like SURVIVOR and BIG BROTHER. They are both about how low will someone go to win some money that winners are on the show because they are too lazy to work for the money like most Americans.
Well it's late at night and only info-mercies are on so I'm going to watch a classic SWORD IN THE STONE and then get some sleep...have to work tonight so look for a new post this weekend.
Take care....
